Herculaneum

About this tour

If Pompeii was the place of the social life, Roman patricians spent their holidays in Herculaneum as it is demonstrated by the presence of many spectacular villas by the sea. Caked and baked by the same a.d. 79 eruption destroying Pompeii, Herculaneum is smaller, less crowded and offers a more intimate peek into ancient roman life. Unlike Pompeii, and due to its closer proximity to Mount Vesuvius, It was covered and sealed under 60 feet of boiling mud that’s why, wonderfully preserved including foodstuff, fabrics and wooden furnishing which were literally carbonized by the hot temperatures. We’ll be visiting the Bath house, its main square, the ancient shoreline with the impressive skeletons of the victims and much more. Our visit will last 2 hours and half considering the small extension of this site(20 hectares of which 5 visitable ) versus its bigger sister, Pompeii.
Hat, comfortable shoes and sunscreen are highly recommended, especially in summertime.
